There’s always someone down in every crowd
Always a nameless figure trading about
He’s at the top of the state administration
Or anywhere else where certain things can’t be expressed aloud Unlike dictatorships that rise and fall
These ones remain, they’ll always outlive them all
‘Cause they adapt, they conform to every standard
Cruel it may be, it doesn’t spoil the silent diplomats ball A skilled collaborator’s neutrality
Makes you alert on forms of deviancy
It’s no real point who exactly gets the sack
Gypsies or Jews, it’s the abuse, the abuse
Of a man on his back Nous sommes très petits
 Nous sommes très petits
 Nous sommes très petits
Nous sommes très petits A skilled collaborator’s neutrality
Makes you alert on forms of deviancy
It’s no real point who exactly gets the sack
Gypsies or Jews, it’s the abuse, the abuse
Of a man on his back Nous sommes très petits
 Nous sommes très petits
 Nous sommes très petits
Nous sommes très petits We’re so small, we’re so small, we’re so small

Working in Los Alamos
Between millions of grains of sand
 Doing your duty for God
And the US of A government Teller and Fermi were there
And the general, what’s his name
 All the facilities here
To create and to crush atmosphere Here are monsters made
True big brothers made Working in Los Alamos
Doing research on neutrons and ghosts
Find out how far we can go
Spending money on things you can’t know We made the Super and they,
They had got it in one week or day
 The nuclear race between nations
Enriched us in various ways Here are monsters made
True big brothers made Progress gets us nowhere Neutronic brilliant ideas
Left untouched by those everyday fears
 Not noticing their secret bond
With the military forces command Scientists were carefully drilled
 About 70.000 were killed
 Ethical conflicts arose
Among others in Los Alamos Here are monsters made
True big brothers made Progress gets us nowhere

O, God of technology
 Material energy
Save, o won’t you save the last dance for me Working in Los Alamos
We lost control of every choice
It’s all anonymous now boys
All part of a big game Damage is near, brain damage is near
Brain damage is near, brain damage is near, Oh! Bell gave us the telephone
 Watt gave me the microphone
Until now things were reasonably clear Once knowledge was freedom, boys
Gave us the strength of nature
Showed us resources that could make
Our emancipation more than just a word Damage is near, brain damage is near
Brain damage is near, brain damage is near
Lost control, lost control, lost control Nuclear mission nuclear nukes and
Missiles pointing their warheads at our foreheads
Even if we turn around, around, around… There’s not one big brother after all
 Because when Oppenheimer died
His kids were there, alive and well
And reproducing, reproducing, reproducing Damage is near, brain damage is near
Brain damage is near, brain damage is near
Lost control, lost control, lost control

Watch the professor’s patience Carries a heavy load Pouring his computations Into the worker’s throat This is a clean profession Dig the illusionists Ivory tower´s passion With a romantic twist Stratifications, equations His figures are clear Figures of fear, going deeper and down No-one can argue the circle is round Science accumulating Leaving us far behind Power to those debating Pulling the ties that bind These standard errors are terrors To codified minds Figures of fear, going deeper and down No-one can argue the circle is round Staring at a saucer full of secrets Leaving us far behind Power to those debating Pulling the ties that bind These standard errors are terrors To codified minds No-one can argue the circle is round Figures of fear, going deeper and down This is a brave new world

When you came out of jail you should have known that When whites come out of prison they turn black When blacks come out of prison they turn purple You´re labelled so you´re easier to check It´s a difficult situation When you´re out there on probation Try to get a job in your position Ignore the stupid talk behind your back ????????????? That´s OK Don´t you give a damn what they say You know they got the rope around your neck It´s a difficult situation When you´re out there on probation Just harassment, just humiliation Getting caught for walking out the door What they call a decent way of living Is not a true suggestion anymore It´s a difficult situation When you´re out there on probation It´s a difficult situation When you´re out there on probation

about

Working In Los Alamos was released in 1982. It was the first mini-album by The Dutch, before "This Is Welfare" and "Under The Surface", the two albums released by Epic. It is a mixture of studio and live recordings. The album is re-released after being wonderfully re-mastered by Wout de Kruif, with two bonus tracks from the same period added to the original five songs.

Studio recorded songs
Nous Sommes Tres Petits was produced by Shell Schellekens at Soundpush Studio, Blaricum, the Netherlands in November 1981.
Working In Los Alamos part 1, Working In Los Alamos part 2 and bonus track Codified Minds were produced by the wonderful Ad Le Comte (†) at Vara's Studio 2, Hilversum, the Netherlands, May 1982.

Live recorded songs
New Words, Might Is Always Right and bonus track Probation were recorded live for Dutch radio broadcasting (Hilversum 3) by Dick Luchtenburg in Bergen op Zoom, the Netherlands, June 1982.

The cover art was made by Toon Michiels †. The photo was taken during the famous Solvay conference in 1927.

The lyrics of Working In Los Alamos part 1 and 2 are about the Manhattan Project, during which scientists developed the technology that created the atom bomb that destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki in the Second Worldwar.

The Dutch are Hans Croon (vocal, guitars), Bert Croon (keyboards, vocals), Jan de Kruif (bass guitar) and Klaas Jonkmans (drums).

This back catalogue album is re-released digitally as part of the resurrection of The Dutch, after a lot of hard work by producer Wout de Kruif. We hope you enjoy it and if you do, drop us a line on Facebook (thedutchband), Twitter (@thedutch6) or what have you.
