Alida Pott

about

Alida Pott (1888-1931) was the only woman to belong to the leading group of art circle De Ploeg, which caused a revolution in Groningen in the 1920s. She was very active within De Ploeg for several years and had fate decided otherwise, she would even have become chairman. Due to her early death, her independent and idiosyncratic work faded from the spotlight for a long time. Since 2018, attention has been given to it again, leading to a retrospective exhibition of her work in the Groninger Museum in 2021. This video is part of the exhibition.

The Dutch honours Alida Pott ("Ali" for friends) in this song, and asks her why she stopped painting and drawing so early in her career to devote her attention to her family.

This song will be featured on the forthcoming new album Solid Ground.

lyrics

Ali, who’s to blame
That your artistic flame
Ended far too soon
It seemed to die out with
Your name

Ali tell me why
What made your ink turn dry
What made you hesitate
When all the while the days
Went by

Oh Alida Pott
You’re on the spot
Oh Alida Pott
You’re so true

Ali, come what may
Whatever people say
Your paintings on the wall
Are definitely here
To stay

Ali did you know
Your portraits are on show
Your recognition grows
The leading lady of
The Plough

Have you ever been
In a watercolour scene
Of blue, white and green
Did you ever know
Those willows in a row
And purple snow
