Spellbound (for Jan Wiegers)

from Werkman by The Dutch / Son of Han

/

about

This is a song about Jan Wiegers, a Dutch painter from Groningen, who introduced avant-garde expressionism to his artist circle De Ploeg, after a yearlong stay in a sanatorium in Davos in the 1920s.

lyrics

Once upon a time when you were young
You were a Northern painter
Travelling to Davos
On your way to clear your head and lungs
But what you cleared was more
Important than just those

They were spellbound
Vibrant
So mesmerised
And their heart sounds
Beating
So harmonised

In the spring of 1921
To all your friends and allies
The painter made a vow
When you came back cured you said that now
Now was the time to change the
Furrows of the Plow

They were spellbound
Vibrant
So mesmerised
And their heart sounds
Beating
So harmonised
